First new theme of 2011

Over the last 6 or so years of using WordPress, I’ve gone through the ever frustrating process of building a custom theme – about 4 to 5 a year! Here is one more shot at that elusive, satisfying theme.

Being the impatient person that I am, this theme is live about a month before its time. I couldn’t wait to get it live and stare at the layout for a while and make changes accordingly.

If you see any weird bits, shoot me a note. Chances are, I might have seen it already and am working on it.
With this theme, I really want to capture a magazine feel. There are a lot of magazine themes out there but what they really mean is – newspaper. I want a simple, clean, magazine.

The home page – yet has some work, but you can see, it has the beginnings of a magazine cover. The main story and then the other highlighted stories at the bottom. I need to finish this off yet.

Once you click into the story page, the featured image bleeds onto the second page. The header is simple and floats to the right of the featured image and the body of the story is below.

Each page – for now uses the same template but that will change. It would be nice I could get slightly different layouts with each story as well – a la Jason Santa Maria.

With that, it is off to fix structural issues before I can begin the visual enhancement of the theme.

Feedback is welcome.

Car Stamps Anyone?

Now that the US government owns about 60% of GM can we see car stamps in the future? Basic cars being offered to low income citizens.
Just bring in the coupon and get a free car. No power steering or power windows, you can only drive a certain number of miles per day.
Okay this is just humourous speculation.

Kia Spectra Commercial.

The “Nothing to compare” commercial for Kia Spectra is brilliant. While AdAge predicts a rise in attack ads this summer, as a follow up to a slow build over the last year, the Spectra commercial does not come off like an attack Ad because of it’s brilliance. It is funny, it is smart and it is factual without being vindictive. Experts say that attack ads should really not directly state flaws – the main reason being to avoid law suits, but also to fight with dignity. The Kia Spectra commercial does it with dignity.

If you don’t remember the Toyota (Corolla?) commercial from a few months ago where there was a monologue of a guy saying that a lot of companies are comparing their cars to a Corolla – why not buy a Corolla?

The Spectra commercial, though a little late, comes out with a pretty funny presentation of directly stating that the Corolla does not have this, but the Spectra has it and so on. The closing line is “Really, there is nothing to compare”.

Pretty darned good!

Edit: It is the Toyota Camry.
